It takes 100 kids to raise a village
Where? West Side Community Centre
When? Thursday February 15th, 2018 6pm
How does it work?
Kids and teens, aged approximately 4-15 come together approx. 3-4 times per year with $10 each to donate to a charity or non-profit. We are also asking that each child bring a food bank item as well as their $10!
The young people nominate an organization when they register. (If a child does not want to present, they do not have to make a nomination). Three of these are randomly selected for the evening. Presenters will be contacted 1 week before the meeting so they can prepare. We only announce which organizations are being presented at the meeting.
The three kids whose charities are selected speak… for up to 5 minutes each, on why they think their organization should receive the donation. Then all members vote on which organization will receive the donations.
The charity with the most votes will receive the group’s collective donation.
100% of donations go to the organization chosen by the group.
Meetings are approximately an hour long.
The kids are encouraged to earn the $10, for example by doing chores.
Any member can nominate a local charity or non-profit organization. Parents can help explain each charity to their children and help them to make their vote if needed. Parents may not speak on behalf of their children during the event.
What do the kids get out of it?
They learn the spirit of giving at a young age. They learn that you don’t have to be wealthy to give. They learn leadership skills and how to speak with confidence in front of their peers. They will meet new friends and strengthen the bonds of existing friendships. They learn to work together and value diverse ideas. They learn that giving is FUN
